An entry-level wine made from nebbiolo and barbera with 5% cabernet sauvignon and merlot; "our super-Piedmont wines are Barbaresco and Barolo," notes Pio Boffa, explaining why this blend is priced like his barbera): Good deep, bright red. Currant, black raspberry and dark chocolate aromas accented by tobacco and graphite; a bit international in style. Then supple and savory in the mouth, showing sound acidity and the cut of the year. Finishes with fairly light tannins, a slight bitter note from the oak and nice grip. Aged in a combination of 60% larger French oak barrels and 40% new barriques. - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous
